My top 4 reasons for being a dog owner
Dear Reader,
Getting a dog can be a transformative step when you're ready. The stress reduction and health benefits of dog ownership are well-documented (link to study provided), but some studies present mixed reviews, prompting me to offer clarification.
Dogs encourage outdoor activity, enhancing physical fitness and cardiovascular health. Even those with mobility challenges can experience improved health outcomes through pet ownership (whether a cat or a dog). Personally, I find comfort in having my dogs with me for protection during outdoor exercise.
On the flip side, studies indicate that people with dogs are perceived as more approachable. While my dog serves as a protective presence, deterring potential threats, he's also an ambassador to my neighbors, especially children who adore dogs. I've never witnessed my Bernadoodles knowingly harm a child—they're kind, loving, and gentle. However, their size, in their excitement, can accidentally knock someone over. Proper training is crucial to prevent jumping and ensure they remain calm, contributing positively to our social interactions.
In a study involving 48 participants subjected to two highly stressful situations—public speaking and a demanding test—three categories were established: A. Alone, B. With a Friend, C. With a strange dog nearby. Cortisol levels, indicative of stress, were measured, and the group with the dog exhibited lower stress levels both self-reported and physically measured. Nevertheless, owning a dog requires care and may add stress if you're already in a caregiving-intensive situation.
Conversely, the routine involved in caring for dogs aligns with the needs of some mental health conditions. Dogs provide unconditional love, non-judgmental companionship, laughter, and a daily routine that can alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. If you're dealing with serious mental health challenges, it's crucial to discuss your specific diagnosis and life situation with a professional to determine if owning a dog is the right choice.
Even the simple act of petting a dog has been shown to increase Oxytocin (feel-good hormone) levels and decrease Cortisol (stress hormone) levels.
So, if you're ready for this holistic step toward health and wellbeing, consider finding a furry companion, train, love, and embark on living your best life. You can click on the image below to put down your deposit to save your spot for a puppy in the next litter!
